Boxing Day Derby

The first annual Boxing Day Derby at the Crab Shack / Jock's Dock was a big success. 75 entrants and a top prize $1,200!

After a blustery week before Christmas, the event got some lucky weather with calm seas and no rain ... right at the 12:30pm finishing up time, the squall kicked up with wind and rain.

Dexter Kennedy won it with a 14.1 winter spring. The photo also has his buddy Jerrod Purdy. The photos below include Roy from Bluewolf Fishing Charters with his 2nd place liquid prizes and the 3rd place kids finisher Aiden with his winnings!

Most of the fishing was between the Sooke Bluffs and Possession Point, on the bottom, 120-150 feet, with glow and purple haze hootchies, and glow teaser head anchovies.

The derby also raised a whole bunch of food for the local food bank, plus the side bet was a 50/50 prize, raising another $200 for the food bank.

A super event, fun for the entrants and funds and food for a good cause.

Derby, Fishing Art, and Our Facebook Page

Sooke fishing is reported to be pretty good right now, with plenty of 8-12 pound winter springs around and a couple of rumoured 20 pounders. The salmon are being caught in the usual locations, from the Harbour mouth west to the trailer park, right on the bottom, 130-150 feet. Jellyfish and glow hootchies, with glow or betsy flashers are the best bet.

There is a local fishing derby in Sooke on Boxing Day. Starts at 8am and finishes at 1pm. At Jocks Dock and the Crab Shack in Sooke. $20 per person with the winner taking the pot.
Youth prizes...Please bring a nonperishable item for the local food bank. Any questions...give Paul a call 250 220 0295.

We have now started a Fishing Sooke Facebook page ... come check it out, and feel free to add your own fishing stories and photos.
