Dave from Ocean Dreams Fishing Charters sent in this photo of a 51 pound halibut caught on herring to the west of Sooke. He also brought in three skates ... big weird looking creatures, sent back to ... do whatever it is they do. Salmon reports continue to come in too, with hatchery springs to 20 pounds or so off the Trap Shack and Secretary Island. The salmon success seems to be deep, from 90-120 feet depths.
Some great news for Sooke salmon announced today on CFAX 1070 News:
SOOKE CELEBRATES START OF SALMON HATCHERY
Apr 16, 2010
SOOKE IS GOING TO HAVE AN EDUCATIONAL SALMON HATCHERY AND INTERPRETIVE CENTRE ON CHARTERS CREEK, THANKS IN LARGE PART TO A DONATION FROM THE PACIFIC SALMON FOUNDATION.
THE FOUNDATION TURNED OVER A CEREMONIAL CHEQUE WORTH MORE THAN 228 THOUSAND DOLLARS TODAY, TO KICK-START THE PROJECT.
JUAN DE FUCA SALMON RESTORATION SOCIETY PRESIDENT RAY VOWLES DESCRIBES WHAT THE MONEY WILL DO...
"Course the construction's going to take up a major part of that, and we're going to be doing some aggressive fundraising to finish off the project. We have to bring hydro in, and water, and you know, all the things that go with it. So we've got a lot of work ahead of us, but we'll have the main building and the hatchery component done by fall"
A HOST OF DIGNITARIES, SUPPORTERS, AND SCHOOL CHILDREN TURNED OUT FOR THE CELEBRATION...JUAN DE FUCA REGIONAL DIRECTOR MIKE HICKS, WHO'S A FISHING GUIDE IN HIS PRIVATE LIFE, CALLED IT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS HE'S EVER WITNESSED.

Their efforts are to be congratulated, this is excellent news for the strength of salmon fishing locally and for education of the general public.
And for local fishing action...reports are that salmon fishing around Sooke continues to be good, though maybe a little slower than a couple of weeks ago. The hot spot is Trap Shack for hatchery spring salmon in the high teens. The fish are mostly caught deep, 100-120 feet.
Gord from Foghorn Fishing Charters reports that salmon fishing has gotten a little better, in terms of both the numbers and size of the hatchery spring salmon caught. He says the Rhys Davis new rubber Baitrix herring strip has been the hot ticket. He reports there are still halibut out there you just have to go find them ... and quite a few crab around too. All in all, looks like a fun day fishing off Sooke and Victoria ... southern Vancouver Island delivers the goods again.
The west side boys sent in this photo of a fun day's halibut fishing, somewhere west of Sooke. They said the halibut were caught in 180 foot depth using herring. Rob, Aaron, and Jamie tagged these three 18, 40, and 44 pound halibut. Good job!
Steve from Seawind Fishing Charters reports some fun Sooke salmon fishing. In just a few hours out, they landed 4 nice springs, with the biggest a 25lb beauty. Unfortunately it was wild, with only hatchery spring salmon allowed for retention, so they had to release it. The next three caught were 20lbs 13lbs and 8lbs. A great few hours of fishing all on anchovy, at 100 foot depth off the Trap Shack. They saw a couple of others around 20 pounds caught as well.
Trevor from No Bananas Fishing Charters has been doing well chasing halibut and salmon in Sooke and Victoria waters also. One trip last week limited on hatchery springs to 18lbs and trolled up a nice 30lb halibut. Another excellent day with a couple of guests ended up with a 73 and 65lber, tossing a couple 30lbrs back. Trevor reports they are getting bigger by the day! Herring was the bait of choice today, and again the 3 humps off Border Bank in 250 feet.
But Trevor's best report of the week is from today, when his wife Chelsea and he landed a beautiful 9lb baby girl, Madison. She's a keeper! Huge congrats to the newly bigger Zboyovsky family.
