Feb 14th Sooke salmon report

Sooke's winter chinook salmon fishing continues to be productive. We didn't hear of any big ones caught this week, but several reports of salmon in the 8-12 pound range, and steady action for smaller ones.

Sunday was one of those beautiful calm-between-the-storms, sunny, no-wind days. On the way out we saw kayakers, paddleboarders, and walkers on Whiffen Spit. There were about a dozen boats clumped together between the Tin Shed and Wells o'Weary, mostly in front of Otter Point trailer park, in 120-150 feet. Action was reported on glow white squirts or irish mist hootchies, or on green/glow coyote spoons, plus any flasher with glow on it.

Here's John R with his first ever salmon ... way to go John!

Great February Fishing in Sooke!

Doug from D&D Fishing Charters provided an excellent fishing report today:

Fishing in Sooke continues to be on fire.

We departed the dock at 0750 hrs today, dropped the crab traps on the way out and then started fishing at 0815 just west of Sooke Bluffs. Fished until 1015 hrs and landed 7 keepers which we released 3, and the two biggest were a 10lb and 14lb.

The fish are close to bottom (130-150) and prefer a faster action, we were using squirts and trolling fast. We also saw lots of other fisherman playing fish during our 2+ hour trip.

Crabbing was again excellent, we got our limit and even had to release a few. All 7"+- crab with hard shells.

Attached is a photo of Wyatt Wright with his 2 fish and the larger fish is a 14 lb white spring which put up a great fight when coming up from 150'. The white springs always seem a little stronger.

So there you go. If you're thinking of heading out for some winter chinook fishing, or kings or black-mouths for our American readers, now is the time!

Note: a less fun addition....A report that thieves are making the rounds to Sooke marinas and removing downriggers and any gear they can get their hands on. Apparently they hit the Sooke Harbour Resort Friday night and Jocks dock before. Watch your gear!
