Fishing has heated up in Sooke waters, here at the end of June.

Leigh Garrod sent in a nice fishing photo, first salmon caught on his new boat.  He caught at the Trap Shack on a red/silver coyote spoon. Way to go Leigh!

Gord from Foghorn Charters reports that salmon fishing has been good in all the usual Sooke spots.  He notes that halibut fishing has been difficult with all the dogfish, but he found a nice one for "Muggsy" and his gang ... 110 pounds!
Wishing a happy Canada Day weekend for everyone.  Happier of course if you can get our fishing!

Doug from D&D Fishing Charters reports a great fishing weekend.  "In a total of 20 hours of fishing with three different groups, we had 16 fish on and landed 9, The biggest was 30 lb and smallest was 12 lb. I also saw that 5 other charter boats came in at noon with a total of 16+ fish (all teenagers). Sunday was the slowest day with no hits from 6 to 10, then three fish on in an hour and at 11 we went in. You just have to be in the right spot at the right time. Stick and stay and make it pay."

It sounds like Trap Shack and Otter Point are the hot spots ... one angler said their lucky combo was a red hot spot flasher and green glow anchovy teaser head.

Have fun out there!

June 20 Sooke Fishing Report

Fishing reports have improved over the past week, probably partially due to the increased local interest in fishing, with the new relaxed regulations.  Many chinook salmon were reported caught, from Beechey Head to Otter Point, most in the teens, but some nice ones in the mid to high 20s as well.

Here's a photo of Steven Crevatin with a beauty... one of three spring salmon caught at the Trap Shack, 40 feet, using anchovies.  Another photo below is a 26 pound hatchery caught last week, held by Tony.

Good times!

Some good news, the regulations have been released for June 16th and beyond: "Effective 00:01 hrs June 16, 2012 until 23:59 hrs July 15, 2012, the daily limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day , wild or hatchery, of which only one (1) chinook may be greater than 67 cm . The minimum size limit in these areas is 45 cm."

In other words, for those fishing in Sooke's waters, you can now you can now keep one big salmon, whether wild or hatchery born.  That's super!

And there's plenty of reports of nice size salmon caught this week, 25 pounds plus, though about 5 to 1 wild to hatchery.  So this will be a relief for local anglers.

Now get out there and catch some!  And send a photo to when you get that trophy.

June 5 Sooke/Victoria Fishing Report

Gord from Foghorn Charters has been having some fishing luck lately around Victoria: "halibut and salmon fishing are good, seeing limits for both. Gotta love hatchery fish!  Here is a couple photos of some happy customers."

And here's Dave Yakimovich with a 101 pound halibut caught at Jordan River last weekend. The fish are out there, so now get out there and get some!
