A report from "Tigerprawn" (reposted from sportfishingbc forum):

Group photo of some of the participants of the Sooke Boxing Day salmon derby.

The winning fish was just over 12lbs. Some nice winter springs and 90% hatchery fish.

Lots of salmon for the Sooke Food bank!

Sooke boxing day derby

The Sooke Boxing Day Derby is happening once again!

The entry is $25.00 per rod and it's a 50/50 derby.  First prize is 1/2 of the money from ticket sales (last year 75+ people) and the other half goes to the local food bank.

There are other prizes as well, including a stay at one of the local establishments a ($500 value) and a rod and reel combo.

Time is from dawn to 1:30

Also, please bring some canned goods to help.  Every bit helps, go into that cupboard and dig out the stuff you don't want -- a great way to clean up your kitchen and help people in need.

The tickets are available at the Crab Shack when open and at Eagle Eye outfitters.

The long range weather forecast is looking pretty good with light winds and showers with a good solunar bite time of between 11 am and 1 pm.

Hope to see you there and good luck!  Oh, and a Merry Christmas too!

Sooke Winter Salmon Fishing

It is getting near Christmas, which for many local anglers is the time to start chasing winter chinook salmon.  Many say these are the tastiest salmon, great bbq'ed or smoked.  Fresh salmon is always great around the holidays, impress your family and friends with a west coast treat!

Local reports are that the fishing is a little on the slow side, but there's a few nice salmon here and there, if you're willing to put the time in.  Here's Steve with an 11.7 pounder caught in Sooke waters (and it's ok by us Steve, if you just round that one up to 12 pounds! ;-)
